I am Helga and I am a designer.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability means living in a way which can meet your present needs and wants without compromising future generations.
How do you practice sustainability in your personal daily routine?
I am consciously making the effort to reduce my daily consumption of plastic. I recycle what I do use as I don't want it to end up in the beautiful ocean!
Tell us about Svala?
Svala is a line of lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear committed to making stylish, cozy and sensuous pieces that are produced sustainably in downtown LA. The line is made from materials such as organic cotton and viscose from bamboo that are dyed using a low impact process with certified organic dyes. We also use reclaimed factory surplus lace fabrics and trims which have been left over from manufacturing. I chose the name Svala as it is my favorite Icelandic girl's name (my mother is from Iceland) and this bird is a symbol of love, loyalty, freedom and hope in many cultures.
How do you source the fabrics you use to make Svala's collection?
I source the lace and trims in Los Angeles from various closeout stores. The viscose from bamboo made from organic bamboo and the organic cotton is from China. I am constantly on the lookout for new, innovative materials and have some exciting ones that I am working with at the moment and will launch in the next few months!
You're favorite Svala piece?
My favorite piece is the Sara nightie (named after my little sister) as it is so cozy and breathable yet feels luxurious against your skin.
Sophistication has many different meanings to me but it is intellectual sophistication that excites me. I am constantly inspired by all the people who have dedicated their lives to building sophisticated, innovative technologies to make green energy, electric cars and other systems that help keep our earth clean and healthy.
