Brooklyn, New York
I am a painter and I am very passionate and inspired by human interactions and processes throughout life.
A consistent element you emphasize in your paintings are the eyes. Could you tell us why they are so important in your paintings?
A lot of times art viewers are overwhelmed by the use of eyes in paintings and other forms of art, but I love this emphasis. Eyes are symbolic of the way people's souls interpret the world. Because I am such a visual person, it is very important to my style of painting. I try to use them in a way that is aesthetically appealing and relatable to everyone. Most of my characters are portrayed as feeling different emotions and sensations, and eyes help interpret their thoughts and feelings.
How would you define clutter? How do you translate it in your paintings?
When the word clutter is used, it often makes one think something is crowded or messy. In my opinion, that is what New York is - a crowded and messy place. I think my style combined with personal living experience in this huge city enables me to illustrate what I see on a daily basis. A lot of times my paintings are described as looking "busy", and clutter has always been an aspect of my art because I try to fill a space in an appealing and creative way. Over the years, my paintings have become more refined and less cluttered, but I think it will always be a part of my style in one way or another.
Your favorite vacation?
Maui, Hawaii, it gave me the realization the art is my calling.
Do you believe providence will always guide us to where we are supposed to be?
Yes. I believe everyone is born with certain talents and gifts, but it is up to the individual to find it by exploring their spirituality and beliefs. I am very fortunate that I found my love for art at a young age because it provides me with the best platform to express myself.
Why did you choose to move to New York?
To pursue my dream of living independently as a visual artist.
When I see my paintings displayed in an exhibition I feel accomplished.
Sophistication is a result of life experiences. It is something that someone can only possess through time and learning.
