I am Edda P and I am a Model, Brand Partner at VYAYAMA, Yoga teacher and a DJ.
Tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to start Vyayama.
I’m an Icelander living in Brooklyn! I started my modeling at age 14 when I won the Ford Supermodel of the World. Working as a model, I’ve had the opportunity to live all over the world until I made NYC home 12 years ago. I’m an avid yogi - so much so, that I got my yoga teacher certificate. With a love for fashion and yoga, I joined forces with the VYAYAMA team. I was inspired to work with them since we make a natural alternative to synthetic yoga wear in a fashion-forward way.
Does Vyayama stand for anything specific?
Yes, it’s pronounced ’vai-ah'mah’, and it is a 3,000-year-old sanskrit word meaning 'to move' and 'to tame the inner breath'. The ancient Ayurvedic texts describe VYAYAMA as movement designed to stabilize and strengthen the body.
Your business is built on great values, using natural fabrics and fair labour practices. Can you explain to us how you see this as vital attributes towards a honest and profitable business in the current market?
We live in such an important moment for our planet with global warming and climate change. We are all responsible for our future, so by taking part in building a brand that is sustainable, eco-friendly and 100% biodegradable, I can make a contribution to an industry that needs to do more.
What is your experience in the health and wellness space?
My background is in dance and when I moved to NYC, I really missed dancing. Then, I got introduced to yoga by a friend and fell in love. It has taught me how to stay balanced and sane in a hectic city. When I’m not working as a model or with VYAYAMA, I teach some private yoga classes and have led a few yoga events. In the future, I would love to take it a step further and lead yoga retreats around the world!
What is your favorite yoga pose?
Full Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana. It opens up your heart and gives you confidence. It’s also very energizing so I love doing this pose after a good warm up in the mornings.
What was a recent challenge you faced and how did you overcome it?
Juggling my time. Working as a model you never really know when your next gig is until a few days before its booked. Sometimes it can be frustrating, but I keep a tight calendar and I take every day as it comes.
Favorite Vyayama piece?
Sophistication is having confidence in yourself. Own it!
